On her newest album, McCLELLAND weaves together stories that have shaped and influenced her life to create her very own fairy tale, but not the kind you tell your children before they go to sleep. THUMBELINA’S ONE NIGHT STAND leads you on a dark journey through obsession, desperation, deception & love. “This is by no means a concept record, but nearing the end of the recording process I considered Thumbelina to be the appropriate character to take us through these fairytale like stories,” Melissa says. “Her journey, lost in a big city will be portrayed literally through the album artwork, but the music can be interpreted in any way the listener chooses.” On her third studio album and second label release, McCLELLAND redefines her sound, beautifully blending her rootsy influences with pop and jazz undertones to create the perfect countrypolitan blend. MELISSA began to create her own songs at the ripe old age of four, armed with a tape recorder her parents gave her as a distraction. By the time she turned eleven she was creating songs on the piano. Although McCLELLAND took violin lessons for ten years, she has no other formal musical training. The violin lessons employed the "Suzuki method" of learning music, which focuses on training the ear. She subsequently moved on to piano and guitar (guitar being her instrument of choice). For THUMBELINA, McCLELLAND reunited with renowned producer Luke Doucet (Sarah McLachlan, Veal). Doucet has been a fan and supporter of McClelland since working on her previous release, Stranded in Suburbia, in 2003. He heard something special in her, and aside from her dazzling talent, he saw a person whose personality and drive predispose her to success. Doucet wasn’t the only person who saw something in McCLELLAND. Earlier this year, Sarah McLachlan asked McCLELLAND to join her summer Afterglow tour, singing back-up vocals. “It was such an unbelievable experience to back her up. She’s such a world class singer and performer and it was the most exciting challenge I’ve ever taken on as a vocalist. I was venturing into uncharted territory with my vocal chords, it pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to become a better singer. It was such a blast to be on stage for the final shows of such an incredible tour.” McLachlan also appears on THUMBELINA as a guest vocalist, along with Greg Keelor (Blue Rodeo) and Justin Rutledge. Headed by Doucet, the players on this record are a who's-who of the Canadian musical landscape. Paul Brennan (Big Sugar, Sarah McLachlan, The Odds, Chantel Kreviazuk) holds it down behind the drum kit, while the bottom-end comes courtesy of bassist Rick May (Ricki Lee Jones, Michael Jackson). Andre Wahl (Duran Duran, Shania Twain); creative and technical wizard engineered and mixed the record with mastering credit going to Chris Potter (Brian Adams, Sarah McLachlan). Sometimes, luck plays a part when a young artist is fortunate enough to achieve a moment in the musical spotlight. For Adrienne Pierce, however, the incredible list of accomplishments that have happened in her young career make one thing very clear: her successes to date are not based on luck. Those achievements are a result of the sheer strength of her artistry as a singer/songwriter, creating a compelling response not just from fans, but also from participating musicians and world-class producers who have joined her along the way. The time leading up to Pierce..s new release Faultline has been filled with the kind of exposure that is normally reserved for more experienced artists. Prior to reaching the recording studio, two of Adrienne's demos were licensed for major American television. ..Fool's Gold.. appeared prominently in its entirety on Grey's Anatomy, reaching over 21 million people, while the demo for ..Lost and Found.. appeared on Veronica Mars as well as the soundtrack CD for the series. ..The excitement generated by those two songs definitely helped get me to the place of being focused on this record,.. enthuses Adrienne ..and other people seemed excited about that as well. It allowed me the privilege of working with some really talented people on this new CD... Both of those tracks were eventually re-recorded for their intended release on Faultline. ..We wanted the whole album to be the same story from beginning to end,.. she explains. ..Those pieces were recorded in different times and places and were their own little world. With more time, I was able to really sing on these, and we were able to better get what we wanted... When Pierce made her first foray into a recording studio, it was for the independently-released debut disc Small Fires back in 2002; at the time, the project was both recorded and initially released solely in Vancouver. With the word-of-mouth success and increased interest in her music, Pierce was signed to Nettwerk Management and eventually to the record label. Having the strengths of valuable experiences as well as supportive allies in her corner, Faultline .. which includes contributions from a host of talented producers and writers .. has proved to be a great opportunity for Pierce to fully spread her wings. It also confirmed to Adrienne that sticking to her artistic convictions made it possible for her to create the kind of music that other talented artists were drawn to. ..I had started out writing some music for this record with Jeff Trott, who co-wrote some of my favorite Sheryl Crow songs ["If It Makes You Happy," "Everyday is a Winding Road" ..My Favorite Mistake..] and then he approached Nettwerk saying he..d love to produce my album. I was completely honored... Another talented producer and mixer, Thom Russo (Johnny Cash, Janet Jackson) also contacted Pierce..s management with the desire to become involved. Between the two, they brought together an enviable list of musicians to Faultline, artists who have recorded with everyone from Beck to REM to Fiona Apple and beyond. ..Even the musicians were joking about what a dream list of great players were involved,.. enthuses Pierce. ..I was thrilled to have all these wonderful people to come and play... Additionally, the diversity of the instruments has significantly increased since her previous release; listen closely and you..ll hear everything from cello to sitar to samples of African vocal loops. While working in the studio has been a wonderful journey, Pierce admits to being equally excited at the thought of taking this new material out on the road. With live shows that international press have described as ..mesmerizing.. and ..intense.., Adrienne..s history of live performances include sharing the stage with the likes of Damien Rice, Ray Lamontagne, Jane Siberry, The Finn Brothers and many more, giving her great experience and inspiration to draw from. While Faultline is the sum of many parts, just one listen makes it clear that the disc is entirely Adrienne..s vision. ..I deeply appreciate all these incredibly talented people with their collective experience..at the same time, this journey also has taught me to trust myself, to know which idea works best based on my own gut... Faultline is filled with all of the emotions that Pierce experienced during the writing and recording of her sophomore CD, with topics touching on everything from protest marches to rising above depression to the mysteries of the afterlife. ..Sometimes, when I listen to it, I think that the music has more questions than answers,.. she admits. ..I went through a breakup while writing a lot of the songs..as a result, if the album had a theme, I think it would be ..change... That certainly is where the title came from. I wrote these songs primarily in Vancouver and L.A. and recorded them in California. The dual meaning of the word ..faultline.. really encompasses a lot that applies to me. First, there..s the literal fear of living in an earthquake zone, but then there..s also the figurative sense of it.. feeling that things are moving, maybe slipping away and it is just a force that you can..t control. Feeling like at any point, something..s gotta give and just bracing for that. FREAKY CHAKRA TVIn 1993, San Francisco based Daum Bentley released his first 12 EP Halucifuge, under the monkier of 'Freaky Chakra, on the seminal west coast underground label, Existdance Records. As, one of the first artists to sign with the Astralwerks label, Bentley released his major label debut, 1995's Lowdown Motivator to critical acclaim. His innovative sound and abandonment of traditional West Coast influence was exemplified in the album tracks "Budded on Earth to Bloom in Heaven" with Curve vocalist Toni Halliday and the psychedelic romp "Peace Fixation". In 1996, Bentley joined forces with electro/experimental phenom Single Cell Orchestra (aka, Miguel Fierro) to become one of the most sought after live techno PAs in the states, playing some of the biggest club gigs and warehouse party's around. Shortly after Astralwerks released, 'Freaky Chakra vs. Single Cell Orchestra', the album became known as a classic and a 'must have' album for any electronic music lover. With the 1998 release, 'Blacklight Fantasy', Freaky Chakra continued to explore the vast electro-space of music possibilities. This album spouts a darker experimental electro and techno-house vibe and the tracks from it were played on turntables world-wide by DJs ranging from Sasha and Richie Hawtin to John Howard and DJ Solar. Bentley has recorded projects with such respected artists as Meat Beat Manifesto's Jack Dangers and John Selway. As well as remixes for the likes of Dubtribe,Cornershop, Charles Webster, Rabbit in the Moon and many others. Throughout the years the Freaky Chakra live PA has played all over the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and down in Australia. Recent releases include an EP for Mark Ambrose's Crayon label, remixes for labels including Whoop! Recordings, Iron box, Hallucination Records,Alexi Delano,Hawke,Rabbit and the Moon and Deepsky.
